Meeting Place: 2024-05-12 at 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Location: Meech Lake O'Brien Beach - P11 Parking
How to find us: Meet at the information boards located just at the start of the trail 36.
I expect parking to be free. This is a week prior to the open of the O'Brien beach. Could be wrong. The total distance for this walk is 3 km.
This time we will visit one of the more well-known and Instagrammable (apparently it is a word) spots in the Gatineau Park - the Wilson Carbide Mills. Shout out to one excellent video posted for the virtual tour. I have posted it above!
Bring water and bug spray, and anything that may be able to help cooling (eg. hat, portable fan). Although walking at normal speed, heat exhaustion is possible and needs to be considered.
Notes:
1. No pets for this walk.
2. Facility is not available at the trail head.
3. If photos of others are taken make sure that you acquired their permissions before posting them on this page.
4. Videos and Trip Reports
Adventure Report - www.adventurereport.ca/the-wilson-carbide-ruins-a-2-6-km-hike-in-gatineau-park/
Youtube - www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AmPCqQm6c8
5. Difficulty - This hike is at Level 2. See description of the group page for criteria.
6. Directions:
Use the Old Chelsea entrance to get into the Gatineau Park, and then follow the road (Chem Lac Meech) until you see P11 O'Brien parking lot on your right.
7. Description
Located in a deciduous forest near Meech Lake, the ruins are the last remaining traces of a fertilizer plant constructed by little-known inventor Thomas Leopold Willson. The complex originally included three buildings: an acid condensation tower, a dam and a generating station. Unfortunately, the ruins were never preserved. The tower was destroyed by fire and, today, only its foundation remains. The dam and plant, its gaping windows still visible, stand near the cascading falls as a reminder of a rich and innovative company — and a glimpse of our scientific history.
